Liverpool hijack Newcastle's move for Victor Munoz — and beat Chelsea to Jacquet

The champions are moving like a club in a hurry: two hijacks in a week as Liverpool snatch Osasuna winger Victor Munoz from under Newcastle's noses and win the race for Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet.

Liverpool's recruitment team have made a habit of arriving late and leaving with the player, and this window they are doing it twice over.

Osasuna winger Victor Munoz looked nailed on for Newcastle — until Liverpool entered the race and turned his head. The deal follows the same playbook as their swoop for Stade Rennais centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, where Chelsea had led the running for weeks before Liverpool closed it out.

What it means: Liverpool are not defending the title — they are re-arming for it. A ball-carrying winger and one of France's most-rated young centre-backs address the two clearest gaps in last season's squad. For Newcastle, losing Munoz late stings twice: the scouting work was theirs, and the player goes to a direct rival.

The window so far: Chelsea have been the volume buyers — Geovany Quenda, Denner, Dastan Satpaev and Emmanuel Emegha in, Marc Cucurella out to Real Madrid. Spurs have leaned on Bosmans: Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka all arrived free, plus Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton.

The window closes 1 September at 23:00 BST. At this pace, Liverpool will be done by August.
